Latin I
9th Grade
Full Year - 1 credit
Latin I introduces students to the language that shaped the intellectual, literary, and theological life of the Western world. Using a language acquisition approach, students learn to read Latin as a language rather than merely decode isolated sentences. Instruction emphasizes Ecclesiastical pronunciation while remaining rooted in the classical Roman tradition.
Through readings presented entirely in Latin, students develop foundational vocabulary and grammar while encountering the daily life and culture of ancient Rome. By the end of the course, students possess the tools needed to begin approaching authentic Latin texts.
Latin II
10th Grade
Prerequisite: Latin I
Full Year - 1 credit
Latin II builds upon the linguistic foundation established in Latin I as students continue developing fluency through increasingly complex readings. Students strengthen their command of Latin grammar and syntax while expanding vocabulary and reading comprehension.
Alongside continued language study, students explore the history, mythology, and culture of the Greco-Roman world while beginning to engage adapted and authentic passages from classical authors. By the conclusion of the course, students are prepared to transition from foundational language study to sustained engagement with Latin literature.
