French I
9th Grade
Full Year - 1 credit
French I introduces students to a new language and culture with the goal of helping students attain proficiency in the skills of speaking, reading, and writing. The curriculum is presented within the context of the contemporary French-speaking world, exploring cultures in France, Canada, and French-speaking Africa. Special emphasis is placed on developing communication skills and on increasing awareness of cultures in the francophone world. There are no prerequisites for this course, and it is aligned with national standards.
French II
10th Grade
Prerequisite: French I
Full Year - 1 credit
French II is a continuation of first year French with an emphasis on the acquisition of vocabulary and grammatical concepts through the context of native speakers in many parts of the French-speaking world. Students gain an even deeper understanding of the language and culture and increase linguistic proficiency using authentic sources and daily oral practice and participation. This course is aligned with national standards.
Latin I
9th Grade
Full Year - 1 credit
In this course, students not only master the foundations of the Latin language but also begin to answer why anyone would even study a so called "dead" language. Students use Latin as a vehicle to explore the ancient Romans who spoke the language. The focus of this class is to understand the basic grammar of Latin so as to be able to begin translation. Students also learn about the world in which Latin was spoken and what it was like to be in that world. By the end of the year students have a deeper understanding of both Latin and its speakers.
Latin II
10th Grade
Prerequisite: Latin I
Full Year - 1 credit
In this course, students expand on the Latin foundations built from Latin I. Students take the grammar learned in the first year of Latin and go further into the language. Students are introduced to more complex grammatical structures so that they will begin to translate ancient Latin texts. Through these translations, they are able to understand more about ancient Rome and those who lived there.
Latin III & IV
11th & 12th Grade
Prerequisites: Latin I and Latin II
Full Year - 1 credit
This course focuses on the study of ancient authors including Ovid and Julius Caesar. By studying Ovid, students learn the beauty of Latin poetry and the unique constructions that are found within. The study of Latin poetry helps to gain a deeper understanding of how Romans interacted with their language. They also look at the prose of Julius Caesar, exploring the ways Romans viewed those who were considered non-Roman.
Spanish I
9th Grade
Full Year - 1 credit
This course is designed to introduce students to both Spanish language and culture. This class emphasizes the language skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing by focusing on the application of simple grammatical concepts. Students listen to basic level Spanish with increasing comprehension, develop Spanish vocabulary for practical everyday use, and speak with correct pronunciation. Students read and write simple Spanish paragraphs and become informed and sensitive to relevant aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures.
Spanish II
10th Grade
Prerequisite: Spanish I
Full Year - 1 credit
In this course, students expand on the foundations built in Spanish I.
